AWAKE  PAPUA

Hope.  Future.  Development.

Our Vision

Our passion and desire is to fight and reduce poverty as well as meet the various needs of the people in Indonesia, especially in Papua. Papua is the easternmost province of Indonesia, consisting of two areas – Papua and West Papua. Papua is the least developed area of the world’s largest island nation. The population there is about 3.5 million people. There are five somewhat larger cities in Papua, but their infrastructure is still relatively underdeveloped. Industry is almost completely missing, which is why many goods have to be imported and are correspondingly expensive. Most Papuans do not live in the cities, however, but far outside in areas that are difficult to reach. Many people live in simple huts, and the few existing roads turn into barely passable mud roads within a short time during the frequent tropical downpours. Job opportunities are limited and the level of education is low. Many children have no chance to attend school and medical care is also inadequate in many areas. In order to address the great and complex needs of the population, sustainable, long-term projects are indispensable. This is where Project “Awake Papua” comes into play and wants to make a difference.

Since 2015….

Since 2015, we have done regularly projects in Papua, paying special attention to tribes that live far beyond urban civilization. For example, in March 2020, just in time before the first wave of the Corona pandemic and the associated travel restrictions, we were able to set up a small library for a tribe in the very eastern part of the province, thus helping to ensure that the tribe’s first school is now equipped with teaching materials. In addition, many children have benefited from the children’s programs we have conducted in various locations throughout the country.

The Project

“Awake Papua” – creating and bringing hope, future and growth through education, healthcare and holistic welfare.

We have started an extensive aid project outside the port city of Sorong, located in West Papua. The focus of the project is to enable the growing generation to break the vicious cycle of lack of education and poverty by providing for their basic needs as well as solid education. In this way, the living conditions of the Papuans are to be sustainably improved and the social and economic development of the country will advance in the long term. We expect that through the different branches of project, people of all age groups will eventually benefit from the project and thus a sustainable change in their living conditions will be possible.

FIVE PILLARS

Pillar 1: Children’s home

This phase of the project has already started. We have started to build a children’s home for up to 24 children. This home will accommodate children who are either orphans or come from extremely poor families that are unable to provide schooling and upbringing for their children due to the overall circumstances. The children’s home’s intension is to help the children grow up to become responsible citizens with noble character and good education level, so that as adults they will be able to tackle the challenges of their country and advance its development.

FIVE PILLARS

Pillar 2: Training center

On the first floor of the children’s home building, rooms will be created that can additionally be used as a training center for local children and young people who are not accommodated in the home. Courses, workshops and programs on various topics will be offered to the local community and beyond. These can be for example, English lessons, afternoon programs such as homework assistance, creative workshops or sports activities. In addition to the programs for children and youth, educational and consulting programs for adults are also planned (e.g. health and hygiene basics, language courses, communication training, etc.).

Pillar 3: Agriculture

project

In the agricultural sector, we would like to bring the concept of the organization “ECHO” to Papua, which has already proven to be very successful in many developing countries. In this agricultural model, knowledge is imparted in a very practical way about how nutrition and health are connected, how one can successfully practice simple agriculture with just very few resources and no start-up capital, and thus fight hunger effectively. ECHO also offers consulting services to cooperating organizations and supports the establishment of such agricultural projects around the world by placing its own interns in the pioneering projects to set them up. When our training center is ready, we will be able to train many Papuans on site in cooperation with ECHO, so that they can in turn multiply what they have learned in their villages. You can find more information about ECHO here:   https://echonet.org/

FIVE PILLARS

Pillar 4: Day clinic

Free medical services such as first aid, wound care, treatment of infections, pregnancy counseling and a small basic pharmacy aim at improving the health situation of the local population. For this purpose, the construction and furnishing of a small building (2-3 rooms) on the site is planned.

FIVE PILLARS

Pillar 5: School / Kindergarten

Helping People Help Themselves

According to the principle of “helping people to help themselves”, we want to help the people of Papua to understand that their living conditions do not have to remain as they were for decades and that the development of their country lies within their own hands. Therefore, it is our goal from the very beginning to establish the individual pillars of the whole project in close cooperation between the Indonesian and European staff. The management of the work on site will be run by a team of foreign experts as well as local staff. In addition, we would like to offer young people from Germany an opportunity to spend a year in our project in Papua in the framework of a “voluntary social year” (FSJ). Our goal is to eventually hand the entire project over into Indonesian hands.

Cost of the Project…

As the realization of this project involves enormous costs, we are hoping for generous support from organizations, foundations and individuals who through their donations will enable us implement all the different steps and bring the project “Awake Papua” to life.

The expected total cost of the project is currently around 850.000€.

We hope to have given you a good overview and are grateful for every financial contribution, whether small or large. By donating into this project, you have the chance to invest in the future of many Papuans.

Upon request, we will be happy to provide you with a rough breakdown of the currently calculated project costs in order to give you an overview of the financial resources required.
